Gary Neville is adamant United will bounce back domestically from their European nightmare.The new club captain sees parallels between Wednesday night's defeat at the hands of Benfica and 1995's UEFA Cup exit to Russian minnows Rotor Volgograd, which spurred Sir Alex Ferguson's side on to their second Double.

"The last time something like this happened was in 1995 when we got knocked out of the Uefa Cup by Rotor Volgograd," recalled Neville. "We went on to win the Premiership and the FA Cup that season and we will react well from this as well.

"There will be no excuses for us now in terms of preparation or fixture congestion. We just have to try and win every game, starting with Everton on Sunday."

Neville insists that the club's under-fire players will stand up and be counted as their performances continue to come under heavy scrutiny.

"The players do not have to lift themselves, they know their responsibilities," said Neville.

"They have a lot of fight as they have shown over the last few weeks. That's why they are at Manchester United."

The Bury-born defender is typically candid about the Reds' shortcomings in the Champions League, but feels the best approach is to remain together and focus solely on Sunday's Premiership clash with Everton.

"Now, we have to say the right things and do the right things," he said. "Providing we keep giving 100%, we know the fans will back us. Now it is up to us to perform well and react well on Sunday.

"There is no doubt we have underachieved in Europe this season. We cannot hide from that fact and there is nothing I can say to the fans that will make them feel any better.

"I am sure there will be a little bit of a circus surrounding this defeat but we have to remove ourselves from that and stay together as a team."
